Installation specification of Fiber Optic Closure
Latest company news about Installation specification of Fiber Optic Closure

The installation of fiber optic closures is critical for ensuring reliable fiber optic network performance. Proper installation protects spliced fibers from environmental factors (moisture, dust, mechanical stress) and maintains signal integrity. Below are the detailed specifications for fiber optic closure installation.

1. Pre-Installation Preparation

1.1 Site Selection

Aerial Installation: Mount on poles or messenger cables, ensuring a minimum height of 5 meters above ground.

Underground/Burial: Install in handholes or direct burial (minimum depth 0.8–1.2 meters, below frost line if applicable).

Indoor/Wall-Mounted: Ensure proper ventilation and protection from physical damage.

1.2 Tools & Materials

Fiber optic closure (matched to cable type: straight-through, branch, dome, or horizontal type)

Fusion splicer, OTDR, fiber cleaver

Heat shrink tubing, sealing tape, waterproof gel

1.3 Cable Preparation

Strip cable jacket carefully without damaging fibers.

Clean and remove excess filling compound (if present).

Leave sufficient fiber length (≥1.5m) for splicing and storage.

2. Installation Steps

2.1 Mounting the Closure

Aerial: Secure with stainless steel straps to prevent movement.

Buried: Place in a protective vault or use a reinforced closure for direct burial.

Pole/Wall-Mounted: Ensure brackets are corrosion-resistant.

2.2 Cable Entry & Fixation

Use grommets/sealing clamps to prevent cable slippage and moisture ingress.

Secure strength members (aramid yarn/steel wire) to the closure’s anchoring points.

Maintain bend radius ≥20× cable diameter (static) or ≥10× (during installation).

2.3 Fiber Splicing & Storage

Perform fusion splicing with loss ≤0.05dB (single-mode) or ≤0.3dB (multi-mode).

Arrange spliced fibers neatly in trays, ensuring bend radius ≥30mm.

Avoid tight bends or sharp twists that cause micro-bending losses.

2.4 Sealing & Protection

Apply waterproof gel or butyl rubber around cable entry points.

Use heat-shrink tubing or self-amalgamating tape for airtight sealing.

For buried closures, ensure double-layer waterproofing (inner seal + outer mechanical protection).

2.5 Grounding (if applicable)

Metallic closures or armored cables must be grounded (resistance ≤5Ω).

Use copper grounding wire connected to a proper earth rod.

3. Post-Installation Testing & Documentation

3.1 Performance Verification

OTDR testing to confirm splice loss and overall link performance.

Continuity check using a visual fault locator (VFL).

Sealing test (pressure test for buried closures or water immersion check).

3.2 Labeling & Records

Mark closure with unique ID, cable IDs, splice dates.

Document splice loss values, fiber map, and GPS coordinates (for OSP installations).
