A Fiber Optic Vertical Splice Closure is a protective enclosure designed to house and protect the splices where two or more fiber optic cables are joined. Its primary purpose is to provide a sealed, stable, and organized environment for fiber splices, shielding them from moisture, dust, mechanical stress, and other environmental hazards. The "vertical" refers to its typical installation orientation and internal organization.

Shell (Dome & Base): Made from durable, UV-resistant plastic (PC, PP, ABS) or metal.

Central Core: The vertical column for stacking splice trays.

Splice Trays: Hold and protect fusion splices or mechanical splices. They have organizing channels and ribbon clamps.

Cable Ports/Inlets: Openings in the base for cable entry and exit.

Grounding Kit: For bonding metallic cable armors.

Installation Process
  • Preparation: The cables are prepared by stripping back the outer jackets, armors, and buffer tubes to expose the individual fibers.

  • Splicing: Fibers are spliced together (usually via fusion splicing) and the splices are protected and stored in the splice trays.

  • Assembly: The splice trays are stacked onto the central core inside the base. The fibers are carefully routed with sufficient bend radius.

  • Sealing:

    • The heat-shrink sleeve is slid over the cable bundle at the base.

    • The dome is placed over the base.

    • The heat-shrink sleeve is positioned so it covers part of the dome and the base, bridging the gap over the cables.

    • Using a propane torch or a specially designed heat gun, the technician evenly heats the sleeve until it has fully shrunk and the sealant is visibly oozing from both ends.

  • Mounting: The sealed closure is then mounted in its final vertical position.
